Sleeping Beauty

Many fairytales have the main character as a woman. For example there is Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Cinderella, and many more. In most of these fairytales the woman is portrayed as innocent and gets in some kind of trouble and needs a man to come save them and therefore make their lives "better" in the end. This is the reason for many people to see woman as weak or less than men from a young age because we are introduced to this amazing fairytales with strong women, but at the same time they almost always end with a man sweeping in and saving the day. This causes society to view woman as people who need a man in their life in order for them to be seen as someone with strength. However, this is not true in the real world. It can be great for someone to have a man who they love that helps them in their life but that does not make women dependent upon men. I agree with the professor from class about how the men in the fairytales can also represent the women finding a way to save themselves. In sleeping Beauty the prince is actually herself finding the strength to fight the curse and awaken herself from her sleep. I think we need to make fairytales that also portray the strength and independence women can have, and what they are capable of doing on their own and fighting their own battles to save the day without the help from a prince who appears out of the blue.
